ANOTHER TRY AT EXPLAINING RUSSIA

The Perched Eye blog is 12+ years old,  from 2009 with President Obama's election. Our focus has been eclectic ...  the ways and directions of American politics and culture, and occasionally commenting on the potential impact of new technologies. Pericles21's observations sometimes attract a critical eye, but the 'pen' remains unblunted.

Russia’s Ukraine misadventure, Putin's "Special Operation", has transformed Russia’s aura from perhaps a somewhat romantic mystery to just plain national psychopathy.

Today, October 31, 2022, I, fortunately, stumbled across James Sunderland’s 2018 Medium piece, Twelve Reasons Why Russia Sucks(Medium, June 9, 2018), … his grim picture of Russian culture and people from his years in Russia. (Is October 31 apropos for the decrepitude Sunderland observed in Russia?)

I wrote a ‘reply’ to Sunderland’s piece, below.

I had no knowledge of Sunderland’s 2018 piece before I wrote my own Medium, August 24, 2022, ‘Russia’ article - SOMETHING ABOUT RUSSIA: A LOOK AT ITS EMBARRASSING, SELF-DESTRUCTIVE INVASION OF UKRAINE… , (Medium, August 24, 2022).

Sunderland’s 2018 observations on Russia’s dark culture, alcoholism, and the hopelessness of its people eerily reinforce my August 2022 perceptions of what Russia might be made of (op cite). My perceptions are formed in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last February 24, 2022, and the in-country behavior of Russian troops in their rape of Ukrainian women, girls, children, men of all ages…and their drunken rampages through the occupied Ukraine territories.

My reply to Sunderland’s 2018 article (op cite):

“This is a frightening, depressing (and more), yet terribly apt piece in the current 2022 context of Vladimir Putin’s national mobilization forcing “300,000 patriots” to go fight against Ukrainians in Putin’s ‘Special Military Operation’ that doesn’t even barely disguise Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. This piece [Sunderland’s] clearly explains for me the war crimes Russian soldiers (and Wagner Group mercenaries) have committed on innocent Ukrainian citizens during the last 8 months of 2022. No wonder Ukrainians refer to the Russian troops as “Orcs” [as Sunderland also uses]…, demons from Hell driven by dark forces and blind drunk rage to kill and maim.”

Russia’s Ukraine misadventure has transformed Russia’s aura from perhaps a somewhat romantic mystery to just plain national psychopathy. (Russia seems to resemble a lost soul that wanders and blindly stumbles among modern nations that are striving to move on to the future.)”

Meanwhile, Russian citizens sheepishly bleat weak protests, allow themselves to be herded into cattle cars to deliver them to the Ukraine front lines…without training (a few weeks or even just a couple of days), with no uniforms or medical supplies, and even family-provided food … and obsolete, rusted weapons (or none) from WW2 (or even WW1), and 20–40 bullets that may explode in the barrels when ‘fired.’

That picture of the grossly inadequate preparation of Russian conscripts for front-line battle is even worse than I predicted in my recent September 2022, Medium piece, HOW UNPREPARED CAN NEW RUSSIAN CONSCRIPTS BE? I WAS SO RIGHT! SADLY (Medium, September 30, 2022).

My September 30, 2022, perception of how grossly under-supported Russian conscripts are going into battle in Ukraine: “I did not expect my September 20 exaggeration to fall short of just how rediculously pitiful their plight mught accturally be. I underestimated the idiocy and social debacle Putin’s ‘Mobilization’ has started.”

The best for the Russian people, and of course for Ukrainians, is for Russia to cease hostilities and leave Ukraine (intact).

BREXIT (UK) — A FAILED, TEAR-SHEDDING DREAM TO RESURRECT THE BRITISH EMPIRE FROM THE AGE OF SAIL IS IN THE GRAVE

-------------

So, ‘Liz’ Truss resigned as Prime Minister (UK) on October 20, 2022 — after only 44 days in office, the shortest since 1827 when Tory George Canning died in office after 118 days.

Her resignation speech is here — a signal example of a nationalist word salad of conservative slogans and hopeful but flawed illogic that some conservatives love to mouth but flounder on after a short time that shows how hollow those slogans actually are.

Ms. Truss makes the fifth UK prime minister in six years — the fastest turnover in nearly a century.

What can one say except it’s about time for the global fantasy-dreaming about past nationalist ‘glory’ to end … the ‘days of sail’ and exploitative spice trade are long over.

The ‘Now’ has changed from the crawling pace of sailing ships to the dynamic, high-tech, increasingly information-driven supersonic age that is above all sustained by interdependent associations not standalone empires… no one country is now truly self-sustaining. Not even America.

Brexit,’ the UK withdrawal from the European Union has proved to be an economic flop run by a false performer in a clown suit and Halloween wig (several candidates here, but …).

What Truss’s resignation means is that political posturing and claiming a mantle of past glory is what it sounded like to many— hot air and opportunism that rapidly turns into a disaster for the naive voter and certainly for their nation.

The lineup of guilty politicians who've covered their true motives or lack of true smarts is long but includes such stars as BOJO (Boris Johnson, Truss’s predecessor), Vladimir Putin, and, of course, the current era’s grand wizard behind the curtain, Donald Trump.

Putin is perhaps a special case as he seems to have the naked power to take Russia down with him, but he will not soften in his pursuit of personal glory and the glow of Tsarist Russia.

Let’s hope the UK will regain its senses…and find a way to re-enter the EU (big problems there with lots of 'cold crow' for the UK to swallow, but it has to be done to save England from economic collapse). And let’s hope the American path doesn’t curve back to Trumpism.

THE 'DONALD TRUMP PROBLEM' IS SIMPLE TO UNDERSTAND & FIX: TRUMP IS AN ANOMALOUS, ERRATIC 'FACTOR' THAT AMERICA IS JUST NOT SET UP TO CONTROL - TRUMP MUST BE BANNED FROM FUTURE POSITIONS OF POWER AND AUTHORITY

-----------

The Trump Problem Is Simple to Understand. America just can't handle the irrational, anomalous, erratic 'FACTOR' that is Donald Trump. (Although it has to be admitted that many American citizens and power-influence centers have learned to cave to Trump for questionable/illicit/power gain.

TRUMP IS NOT SMART ENOUGH TO BE INTENTIONALLY BAD ... he is just ANOMALOUSLY BAD. And he must be removed from further mal-participating in society, or at least in America.

'Normal' boundaries and controls can't control Trump, and he appears to sneer at his 'opponents'/competitors who follow law or precedent, ...while he does not.

Trump operates by ad hoc, transactional-ism which immobilizes and disables his rational thinking, play-by-rules competitors ...and his victims.

It's time to just acknowledge that:

(1) AMERCA'S RATIONAL LEGAL AND LOYALTY PRINCIPLES CAN'T HANDLE TRUMP BECAUSE HE SEES THEM AS 'FOREIGN AND EXTRANEOUS';
(2) TRUMP HAS TO BE SEEN AS AN ANOMALY;
(3) TRUMP MUST BE PREVENTED FROM HAVING ANY FURTHER KIND OF POWER/AUTHORITY/POSITION OF INFLUENCE.

Of course, Trump would/did sell/promise classified secrets to Russia (and promise lifting sanctions on Putin) in return for Russia's future favors and past assistance to being elected in 2016, and forthcoming in November 2022 and in 2024.

UKRAINE: THE LAMENT OF NEW RUSSIAN CONSCRIPTS

The Perched Eye blog is 12+ years old,  from 2009 with President Obama's election. Our focus has been eclectic ...  the ways and directions of American politics and culture, and occasionally commenting on the potential impact of new technologies. Pericles21's observations sometimes attract a critical eye, but the 'pen' remains unblunted.

----------

Putin has declared a call-up of maybe 300,000. Sad. Putin doesn’t have to train or equip them (naive western reasoning).

The lament of a new Russian conscript headed for Ukraine — cotton shirt and pants (& winter’s coming), sneakers, a canteen of meth-laced weak tea, a WW2/1 rifle, and 30 bullets… you won’t last long enough to even use that. But, 'Rodina'.

SHOULD DONALD TRUMP BE INCLUDED IN AMERICA'S OFFICIAL GROUP TO ATTEND QUEEN ELIZABETH’S STATE FUNERAL

---------

Whether or not Donald Trump should be included in the official American contingent to Queen Elizabeth's state funeral is the sort of dilemma that helped destroy the Weimar Republic (Germany, 1920s) and assisted the rise of Adolph Hitler, i.e., a democracy faced with an anti-democracy antagonist (Hitler, Trump) who insists on his democratic-principle ‘rights’ to speak as he wants, although his words incite anti-democracy mob acts.

The Weimar Republic's historically-proven, correct handling of the early Hitler would have been to keep him in prison for the full 5 years of his 1924 sentence for insurrection and treason… instead of letting him use democracy’s own principles to get out of prison after only 9 months…during which state-supported time and state expense, Hitler wrote “Mein Kampf”… which was a factor largely accountable for the murders and war-killings of about 60 million humans. Once free, Hitler climbed the political ladder supported by his Brown Shirt mob (‘MAGAs), who he later ‘cast aside’ (canceled, murdered, eradicated) when they became a political embarrassment. (MAGAs are now learning that lesson!)

Donald Trump. Trump has proved himself to be an “anti-democracy factor” and has been impeached for an attempted insurrection and failed coup (the "Jan6" 1921 event).

Whether to include Donald Trump to attend Queen Elizabeth's state funeral as part of the official American contingent, is American democracy’s dilemma. Trump's presence at Elizabeth Regina’s state funeral would appear to be a cruel jibe at the good that Elizabeth symbolizes, and a joke on America itself.

Trump should not be invited by the current American President to attend per traditional protocol -Trump flaunted, scoffed at, ignored, tainted, and rejected that sort of polite democratic tradition long ago.  (IMO, Trump should be ‘allowed’ to sit this one out, tune into the funeral from one of his 'shady' mansions, and wait for his indictment. Maybe harsh, but 'Jan6' and ‘Weimar’ …history, dammit.)

SOMETHING ABOUT RUSSIA: A LOOK AT ITS EMBARRASSING, SELF-DESTRUCTIVE INVASION OF UKRAINE — SHOULD WE HAVE SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL… OR, AT LEAST EMPATHY FOR A NEAR-PSYCHOTIC NATION?

The Perched Eye blog is 12+ years old,  from 2009 with President Obama's election. Our focus has been eclectic ...  the ways and directions of American politics and culture, and occasionally commenting on the potential impact of new technologies. Pericles21's observations sometimes attract a critical eye, but the 'pen' remains unblunted.                                                                                                                                                                                  -------------------

Despite the title of this post, America’s General Colin Powell’s words regarding how he intended to respond to Iraqi Saddam Husein’s invasion of Kuwait are very appropriate for how the world should deal with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine until Russia can change its ways — ‘…isolate the Iraqi Army (Russia in this case), choke it and kill it!’ (in roughly those words.) Ukraine, the invaded victim, assisted by its western allies, has begun that process of resistance against Russia, and it will continue to fight until Russia is serious about peace or it collapses.

Russia as a state, and its people, have historically worn a cloak of dark moodiness and mystery that has often posed an enigmatic problem for the world to figure out. The quest for global stability through international diplomacy is not the least reason to try to understand Russia. But with the ‘Ukraine Matter,’ Russia appears to have detoured, or returned to the path of an irreconcilable predator — contrary to the hopes and dreams of ‘fellow travelers’ and supporters who had justifiably developed visions of a peaceful and prosperous Russian future. In harsh retrospect, Russia’s February 24, 2022, invasion of Ukraine seems to have been one of modern history’s dumbest moves (or, smartest move if one is motivated to ‘engineer’ a Marxist Dialectic transformation of the Russian communist movement.) In the six months since it began, the ‘Ukraine Matter’ has wrecked Russia’s economic and social pillars (the domestic stability and international status that Russia deservedly earned after 1991, the (titular) end of the Communist regime.) Russia has not only failed to dominate the Ukraine stage but has proved itself to be a hollow log stuffed with obsolete or inoperable weapons and more outdated, ineffective war leadership and strategies. Will a deliberate ‘dialectic’ re-set restore revolutionary zeal and start a new era of Russian state success?

Russia’s Ukraine ‘embarrassment’ has not only caused a loss of its international status but also signals that more Russian satellite nations (Chechnya, especially) may follow Ukraine into distancing themselves from Russia and either joining or favoring NATO and the EU.

Summarizing. the Ukraine Matter seems to make no sense from the Russian point of view: Putin, Russia’s real-life absolute dictator, had it all — complete ‘ownership’ of Russia’s financial and resources wealth, complete control of Russia’s oligarchs, a newly satisfied population enjoying a near-western lifestyle with Starbucks, McDonald's, and freedom to travel. And, there was something new with the Russian people — ORDINARY RUSSIANS WANTED TO RETURN HOME TO MOTHER RUSSIA AFTER SUNNING IN MORROCO, ITALY OR SPAIN, and shopping in Paris and London. Russia’s future looked rosy, and all of THAT should have assured Putin and his establishment of future nights of restful sleep. But it all seems to have crumbled away (or was thrown away) in the 6 months since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, to September 3, 2022.

(Note: Russia has had the best ‘deal’ of any invading nation perhaps in all history — Ukraine and its western allies have deliberately declared “off limits” responsively significant military strikes into Russian soil (although there have been civil acts of sabotage). This strategy is so much in Putin’s favor that he can hardly complain about anything while Russian army units suffer almost 5x Ukraine casualties (~49,000 Russian soldiers killed since February 24, 2022, as of September 3, 2022).

Until February 24, 2022, with Russia’s Ukraine invasion (which was initiated like one of Putin’s idle afterthoughts), the world of free nations and even not-so-free were like grazing deer watching a hungry wolf circling the meadow but believing their neighbor, not them, would be the next target.

BUT, the shock of the Ukraine invasion was not so much that Ukraine was targeted and pounced on as much as the shock was when Ukraine said in effect, ‘Sorry, we’re not going to put up with your bullshit, Russian Bear, so “Fuck Off”…and here’s something to remember us with, a big HIMARS round up your a…s!’

And now the secret is out: sheep, goats, cows, and deer have horns too…and are very willing to use them. Ukraine has wised up to Russia’s ’Game’ and has run to the Big Bull (NATO) for protection. And the Russian bear is bleeding, badly…as it must continue to bleed until it backs away from Ukraine. (Meanwhile, Finland, Sweden, Chechnya, and other ‘Stans’ are getting ready to follow Ukraine’s path.)

An overview of Russia shows historical cycles of flameout and rebirth.

Russia is now in a ‘flameout’ cycle, and the ‘why’ is the Russian Enigma that has troubled many artists over centuries who have authored, composed, and sung of Russia’s weary soul that seems to forever drag Russia back from sunny meadows back into the dark forest This is a cycle not fully understood even by its own people…who have learned to consume vast quantities of Vodka to mute its presence in their lives. (But the flameout-rebirth cycle does fit the Marxist Dialectic theory of history …so perhaps the current flameout is not so dire a situation to Russia’s leaders, i.e., Putin.)

(Russia’s path is a continuing, enigmatic drifting and wallowing in stormy waves of its own making, but this current Russian-made maelstrom with Ukraine is too much for the rest of the world to sit and watch. So, Russia’s antagonists, the western allies, have decided to support Ukraine's resistance to Russia’s invasion.)

Russia is a vast geographic region of natural riches and hard-at-work people. Yet, historically Russia has always been burdened by a ‘monkey on its back’ that has anchored it in place or even sunk the ship of state. That ‘monkey’ has been a monarchical or totalitarian Russian state that has locked its people in serfdom and doomed them to seek a different and better existence. This ‘push-pull’ dynamic has made for a repertoire of great literary works, music, and poetry … yet reflecting terrible social angst.

The current Russian implosion cycle needn’t have happened. But as some see it, it had to happen. Is it because Russia (its people and leaders) just can’t bear up to peaceful success and happiness? Or, is it because ‘It’s just that ‘time’ for a Marxist Dialectic reset?

And this implosion had to be precipitated by the upwelling of self-destructiveness from the soul-darkness of one of Mother Russia’s sons, i.e., Vladimir Putin.

Putin is Russia’s destined (since 1991) total-power dictator (or has been until…next week, next month?) who achieved for Russia a longed-for status of stable foreign relations, successful economic trade links, and even by ‘Western’ standards, a high standard of living for its people. Yet, in 6 months since Russia invaded Ukraine, Putin has apparently blown it all away… or at least precipitated irreversible cracks in the Russian hegemony with important neutral buffer states now openly fleeing to full NATO membership (Sweden and Finland officially admitted, and Ukraine’s application to be admitted to NATO as a “new strategic reality.”)

Overall, the Russian taint (enigma) of soul-restlessness and dreams of ‘serving’ Mother Russia to restore her imperial status have just about wrecked any global respect (and fear) Russia has gained over the 70 years since Stalin.

Russia’s enigmas add up to a flimsily-substructured nation that is occasionally operational yet always seems to be standing on spindly legs. Russia seems to gather strength to stand on its own but then falters and falls … but it falls only so low.

The Motherland consumes its children. As pointed out, the first Russian enigma is its soul-darkness so often portrayed in words and songs, novels, poems, symphonic musings, opera,…etc. that picture Russia even by ‘its own’ as dark, moody, soulful, poetic, and tragic. And its people sense all of that and survive with alcohol. (Perhaps this is why Russia has the world’s second-highest level of alcoholism, 21%, after Hungary’s 21.2+%!). The result is global portraiture of Russia’s people as inwardly despondent despite their heroic steadfastness and sacrifice to The Rodina, Mother Russia. The Motherland consumes.

The Russian folk seem resigned to servitude yet resentful and yearning for freedom…creating a Nihilism that is never far from the surface of Russian life…and creating a Russian self-awareness of their depression and near psychosis.

The second face of Russia is the people themselves. Robust, poetic, dedicated, brainy, heroic (even in the face of pressures from its own nation) … all good stuff. But then, they show tendencies to be nihilistic, fatalistic, moody, soul-dark, looking for leadership but distrustful from centuries of serfdom, isolated on a mid-continent ‘island’ separated from Asia and ‘Europe,’ Slavic yet not wholly so.

Russia’s 2022 Invasion of Ukraine. (Are we witnessing a 21st-century re-enactment of a 600BC battle between the Scythian Horse Lords (Ukraine, Crimea) and their antagonists? Indeed, the unity, resourcefulness, and especially Ukraine’s ability to quickly adopt allied weapons to their own advantage reflects an inherited tribal facility with modern technology to assure their survival. In the same vein, Ukraine is noted for its expertise and quality of industrial products. Ukraine, the 21st century Horse Lords: Herodotus, the 4th century BC Greek historian, would be amazed but not surprised at Ukraine’s willingness to take on Russia ... with success.)

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has proved a global ‘reveal’ — that Russia is a hollow shell, rotted from within by its own leaders’ corruption. Yet even from its weakened position, Russia (Putin) continues to sacrifice Russian youth, destroying Russia’s economic stability for seemingly nothing more than to sustain Putin’s ego.

From being on good (and profitable) terms with just about every nation on the planet (Western Europe, the Baltics, Ukraine, the Balkans, Chechnya, and the ‘Stans’), and raking in huge profits from fossil fuel sales, Russia has in 6 months lost almost all of this ‘capital.’

An especially critical loss to Russia are the choices of former buffer countries, Finland and Sweden, to seek admission to NATO … and they may be followed by other servitude allies like Chechnya and some of the ‘Stans’ who now see themselves as nations, families, and stability perched on the edge of a cliff at the mercy of Putin’s unstable, cruel, inhumane ego that has shown itself capable of WW2 atrocities and mass destruction. The murders and torture of Ukraine citizens have been extremely costly to Russia.

The effects of Russia and its pains now extend beyond its borders, creating a planet that looks like a dysfunctional family. And nothing excuses Russia’s behavior toward Ukraine from being seen as a cruel, torturing, and near-psychotic state.

THERE MAY BE MORE FBI ‘SEARCHES’ ON TRUMP-A-LAGO AND WHO MIGHT HAVE ASSISTED DONALD TRUMP? WHAT ABOUT INTELLIGENCE RISKS? TREASON?

The Perched Eye blog is 12+ years old,  from 2009 with President Obama's first term. Our focus has been eclectic ...  the ways and directions of American politics and culture, and occasionally summarizing the potential impact of new technologies. Pericles21's observations sometimes attract a critical eye, but the 'pen' remains unblunted.                                                                                                                                                                                  -------------------

The rumor is growing that there may be a second FBI search needed to remove additional classified, hidden, White House documents from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. And, the nature of those documents may be even more serious intelligence threats to American (and it’s allies') security. (The Washington Post's updated report states the August 8, FBI search was about classified documents pertaining to nuclear weapons.)

All of the "classified documents" mess precipitated by the August 8, 2022, FBI search of Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate raises the thought that because, from reports while he was President, Donald Trump was not savvy enough to understand intelligence matters, nor even interested enough to attend in-depth intelligence briefings, he couldn't have, by himself, put together a plan to first of all, select, then to remove those documents.

(Note: as reported in the CIA's 4th edition of it's in-house academic center's book, Getting to Know the President (4th edition, October 2021), after the 2016 election, educating Trump-POTUS in the intelligence part of his presidential duties was always difficult and made additionally so because of Trump's  personally friendly take on Russian interests

Briefing Trump presented the Intelligence Community with the most difficult challenges it had ever faced.  Trump had publicly criticized CIA and the outgoing DNI and disparaged the substantive work and integrity of the intelligence agencies. In addition, the controversy over Russian interference in the 2016 election and Trump associates’ contacts with Russian officials heightened tension between the IC and the president-elect. After the inauguration, the briefings soon settled into a pattern: they were held only two or three times a week, Trump did not read the PDB closely if at all, and the briefers had to draw his attention to the most important issues.

(And, why hadn't the Secret Service objected at the time to the document removals? Who selected and loaded the documents into the boxes? Who carried the boxes to waiting trucks? Who eventually 'spilled the beans'? All of these steps, and more, seem beyond the attention span, and even the intelligence of Donald Trump to carry out.)

The logistics of the overall selection, boxing and removal to Mar-a-Lago 'says' involvement of complicit third parties - intelligence-knowledgable, able bodied, complicit third parties who assisted-guided-instructed Trump to select and remove those 27 (now 27+) boxes of classified documents. (Note: just one classified document in a box makes the whole box 'classified' until culled and cleared by appropriate American intelligence bodies.)

IMO, the complicit third party to the removal of boxes of classified materials from the White House to Mar-a-Lago must be ‘friends’, assets or representatives (agents) of foreign states operating against American interests!

The bottom line question that will probably appear from the fog is ‘has Donald Trump indeed been an active asset-in-place operating in the interests of an enemy foreign state, i.e., Russia? And, from what time period before he came into the White House has might Donald Trump have been a foreign intelligence asset?' Will "treason" appear again in Donald Trump's 'interactions' with, and leanings toward Russia?
