HISTORY REPEATS: COMPARING OUR COVID-19 PANDEMIC TO THE 1346 AD GREAT BLACK PLAGUE

America is experiencing a critical historical ‘deja vu’ in at least two significant ways that threatens to sink our ‘ship-of-state. The most threatening is the pandemic viral disease, Covid-19, which current humanity, like 700 years ago, is struggling to organize itself to cope with.  The ongoing threat is economic which agin. Like the recurrent waves if pandemic disease, we have not been able to control... neither the periodic collapses nor the speculative greed driving usover that economic cliff-edge,

First, America is suffering the afore-mentioned global virus pandemic, known as ‘Covid-19, the fourth pandemic since 542 AD (according to epidemiological historians).  And, as in 542 AD, humanity, now globally confused and uncoordinated; or at least so in the case.of America.  (How Life Under the Bubonic Plague Reflected the [current] Coronavirus Pandemic, April 27, 2020).

And additionally, we are experiencing along with the Covid-19 virus inundation, the cancerous worsening of class (race and caste?) inequality of wealth and privilege that has virtually remained unchanged since the Roman Empire of 542 AD, extending through the feudal Middle Ages when the upper 3-5% of Western Europe’s population owned 80-90% of arable land, animals, forests and mineral wealth, and now in 2020 when same degree of inequality exists, though the landed nobility is replaced by a financial-markets elite and super-wealthy created by a century of predatory, ‘free-market’ capitalism.

2020’s Neo-feudalist world picture seems to send a fatalistic message - that perhaps inherent in Western Culture is a built-in seed of instability and rot that at any moment can inflame into full mayhem with faces of social upheaval, economic collapse and disease pandemic .... in all combinations.

This condition, the broad-spectrum collapse on a global scale, might be termed ‘Civilization Implosion.’

Right now (actually since March 2020), we are experiencing a global scale ‘IMPLOSION’ of just about every aspect of global culture. This imploson happened unprecedently fast (and without warning, so it seemed!) And everything simultaneously seemed to come apart - hospitals overflowing, schools and colleges closing classrooms, restaurants and bars shutting,! Imploding! Exploding! Confusing! Terrifying! We are like ‘deer in the headlights.’  (But meanwhile, as humanity is about o ‘bite the big one,’ ‘buy the farm,’ one hears that the lesser cousins, our ‘animal’ co-dwellers who reside just a wall away in many cases, are blithely, and undisturbed, taking back the streets, lakes, and perches in our cities. Plus, the marine mammals seem jolly enjoying the fall-off of noisy, oil-leaking shipping. But, sadly, we humans, from much-repeated practice, have demonstrated a knack for escaping extinction and recovering, and then even ‘advancing.’ Alas, dear porpoises and urban raccoons and all, ‘enjoy our self-quarantining while you can...it won’t last....and we humans probably once again won’t learn...but no doubt there’ll be a ‘next time,’ wearing the same masks of human stupidity.

(Hmmmm??? Why is it that the animals are not as stricken as humans. Or is it that we just ignore their suffering?)

Are we, humanity, blissfully ignorant of our precarious ‘hanging ten’ on a tidal wave of self-destructive greed magnified by a global disease that once again threatens to wreck all that humanity has built?

Could it be that in addition to our folly, Mother Nature’s micro-virus messengers are wagging their COVID-19 fingers at us saying in their tiny voices, ‘Momma warned you/ We told you, don’t push it, humans, or she will send you right back to fighting your monkey cousins over bananas and coconuts!’

We pray that most of us will survive this repeat performance of a Great Pandemic, which we’ve named Covid-19. (Mother Nature, Gaia, no doubt knows the proper name, but she hasn’t yet let us in on all of her secrets!)

Academically speaking, Covid-19 is the fourth Great Pandemic since the 542 AD, ‘Justinian Plague’ that exploded from Asia then via Constantinople (capital of the Eastern, Byzantine, Roman Empire), then to Europe (and essentially closing down the Roman Empire).

But, among the 400 years of disastrous plague storms following the Justinian Plague of 542 AD,’ the 1345-48 AD plague, The Black Death,  created conditions so frightening that all of western ‘civilizaton’ seemed to recognize its overall death and seemed to come awake to its collective value which should be preserved, somehow.  This new perspective spawned a new generation of artists, writers and thinkers who sought answers, or at least useful perspectives on the meaning of life and humanity from classical art and philosoophy that had disappeared since the end of the Roman empire. This drive for ‘rediscovery’ created a transformative historical period now known as the  ‘Renaissance,’ the rediscovery of ancient, classical culture (science, art, literature, and medicine). The ‘spark’ that set the Renaissance  in motion is credited to  Petrarch (1345 AD), the Italian poet and scholar who rediscovered the classical Roman writings of Cicero (106-43 AD).

Point: will the broad-spectrum ‘shakeup’ of global cultures and institutions provide an impetus for a 21st-century renaissance? Will new ideas bloom from the ashes left by the Covid-19 pandemic? Let’s hope so.

At least for America, fresh thinking can help (is needed, desperately?) in the areas of economic redevelopment, wealth redistribution, healthcare, education, the American legacy of slavery, our Civil War and left-over racism, and voting,

The line of Great Pandemics following the Justinian Plague of 542 AD, occurred as a series of waves that originated in Asia and crashed into Europe from 1348 until as recently as the 2020 Covid-19 viral disease.

The next prominent plague following the 542 AD, Justinian Plague, occurred in 1345-48AD, the Black Plague (‘Black Death’)  a bubonic bacterial affliction described in Boccaccio’s The_Decameron, and reputedly preserved in these long years in the childrens’ nursery rhyme,  “Ring Around the Rosie, Pocket full of Posies,” etc.). Then the ‘last’ plague of the 400 year pandemic since 1348 AD, flooded into Europe from China in 1665-66, the Great Plague of London (diaried ‘real-time’ by Samuel Pepys , and again described by Daniel Defoe’s A Journal of the Plague Year  published in 1722).  Then came again from China, a global pandemic known as the Third (Bubonic) Plague Episode(1850-1890’s), and once more in 1918-1920 AD (the Spanish Flu).

Crashing tidal waves of the disease have periodically washed across western lands for the last 1500 years, and, to our shock, even in these times of technological superlatives, we are experiencing a disease inundation repeating itself, and like our predecessors in 1345-48, and 1665-66, we have been caught unprepared though not exactly forewarned, just perhaps preoccupied with sniffing out riches.

So we here are - in the midst of our 2020 AD Pandemic, ‘COVID-19’, again from China (Wuhan), again a ship of fools wallowing in stormy pandemic confusion - leaderless, rudderless, paralyzed by administrative confusion and partisanship, and all the while counterproductively seeking to somehow gain speculative wealth from others’ suffering such as overcharging for critical hospital supplies and citizen masks.  “Ship of Fools’ seems very much alive.

The will be more plagues, no doubt, as it appears humanity is sadly ‘endowed’ with the ability to forget lessons learned from past epidemics and pandemics. We have learned, though, to acknowledge there are ‘natural reservoirs’ (a disease-nurturing environment that supports the ongoing evolution for pandemic diseases).

IMPORTANT NOTE
In the face of every pandemic, it seems, humans have reacted in a characteristically Devil-May-Care, ‘lets a party while we can‘ way!  Compare the following two graphics depicting a 14th-century woodcut, ‘Walking-Dead’ revelers in a ‘Dance-of-Death,’ and a 2020 photo showing an American over-crowded Pool Party held during a national ‘quarantine’ - and defying local stay-at-home and social distancing guidelines...which have been (are) a  politically loosened ‘recommendation set’ allowing state-by-state discretionary interpretations (how ‘wishy-washy’ can we get).  Plus, throw in a dose of Charismatic religious fundamentalism that apparently translates the Good Book to say something like, ‘when it's your time, it's your time, why fight it!’. And here we are, back to 1348 AD.

This 1493 AD woodcut of The Dance of Death (Danse Macabre’) shows humanity frolicking in the face of relentless death in the 14-15th century time of both famine and pandemic plague. The Black Death carries a message for us in today’s moment of pandemic Coronavirus disease (presumably originated from a similar animal vector, this time the bat rather than the 14th century’s rat).

And, the Peak-pandemic, summer 2020 version of  the 14th century’s ‘Let’s Party Like There’s No Tomorrow’:

Even separated by 700 years, the Black Plague (1348-1490) and the current Covid-19 Pandemic (the fourth Great Pandemic - 542ad, 1348ad, 1890 ad and 2020), both pandemics have had the same outcomes, in addition to sudden onset and great loss of life - social panic, political polarization, religious evangelism (with death cultism) and general confusion....all of which, if one pauses to think about things in the larger picture, illustrate how fragile are the ‘works of hu-mans’.

In addition to our current Pandemic, the overall theme for the past three years has been the barreling train wreck that is the Trump tenure. From the first week of Trump in the White House, we’ve watched America being dismantled. At first we thought, he’ll calm down...soon. He’ll ‘grow’ into the office. But that didn’t happen.

The dismantling of America started from the beginning of Trump's tenure and hasn’t lessened... as with a temperamental child, things broke or were broken so quickly . And now America is almost down to ashes.

And that is another lesson we’ve been forced to confront: the American constitution really is a framework whose implementation relies on there being a core set of principles within the nature of a president that, despite political party ties, provides ‘constancy‘ and above all explanations for executive actions.

This feature of our Constitution - a great great framework construction, broad yet fixed in law, and reliant on principled execution - has given America stability combined with robustness, ie., adaptability to history and societal growth and maturity. It appears that Trump neither meets the qualifications needed for the chief executive nor comprehends the guidelines for performing the job.

The ancient Greeks, who has died us the formula for our democracy, had two terms they invented from their own experiences over 600 years -  kakistocracy and idiocracy. In short, These words describe a confused and disorganized government led by those who are completely unqualified And who most importantly also lack a sense of the greater good beyond their own selfishness (Trump is both of these combined into one).

And this is where America is now...America is now a ‘ship of fools’ captained by the greatest fool of us all.

The fragility and impermanence of human society constantly threatened by our hubris, is even for our ‘modern’ society, which has progressed from a belief in the Ptolemaic earth-centered universe to walking on the moon, a repeating challenge we must nevertheless take on like some permanent Sisyphean burden, a tragic original sin imbedded in our genes.  The Classical Greek philosopher Plato (The Republic, 375 BC) aptly described this human condition as the winding journey of a ‘Ship of Fools.  In significant ways, this is where we are - on a ship of fools ‘led’ (or cheered on from the poop deck) was  by a rancid-brained fool’s fool.  Note the Wikipedia descriptor of Plato’s Ship of Fools in his ‘Republic’ (Book VI):
ship of fools is an allegory about a ship with a dysfunctional crew. The allegory is intended to represent the problems of governance prevailing in a political system not based on expert knowledge, such as democracies.
There’s the shipowner, larger and stronger than everyone in the ship, but somewhat deaf and rather short-sighted, with a knowledge of sailing to match his eyesight.
In significant ways, this is where America and the globe are - on a ship of fools ‘led’ (or cheered on from the poop deck) by a hubris-full, rancid-brained fool’s fool’s (2020’s fool, the ‘kakistropic’ D Trump).

(Post script: it’s not that Trump has no competence, it’s that his abilities don’t seem to match the requirements for the President of the United States.

From the Far Side of the Looking Glass, Or, ‘Life’ and Survival in the Lair of the Red (Orange) Queen - Pt 1

A Mantra of these Trump-times (it’s not you):
‘Delicious Consistency of Inconsistency’ (Grok-therapy)

With the 2016 election, to many Americans, the majority by 3+ million votes, America stepped thru Alice’s  Looking Glass into an unceasing, day-by-day and escalating madness emanating from a dark place in the brain of what appears to be a chief executive of ‘greatly’ weirdness (D Trump) - who has single-handedly remade America, by comparison from rational previous presidencies, into a chaotic unreality resembling a pumpkin-head version of Alice’s Lair of the Red Queen...where each day’s new craziness is unrelated to the previous day; although, 3 or 4 months after the 2017 inauguration, and to this time, the lack of consistent sense and logic has become in itself a ‘consistency’ in a warped, mind-numbing way. Briefly put, the Trump years have not been a peaceful place to live. (And his reservoir of crazy seems bottomless and full of nasty, rotted blood long ago sucked from victims by a goblin-vampire (the worst) who is running rampant through All of America, ‘us’ and ‘them’!)

The mantra of these Trump-times:
‘Delicious Consistency of Inconsistency (Only the Mentally Challenged Can Grok!)’

All of Trumps hate and weirdness should have been bled out long before now, but it keeps coming.

And now look at us. PANDEMIC!?  And then the Red Queen’s mock-friendly, ‘I’m your Pal’, southern church people...‘Yeah, sure, go on now, only I understand, not them scientists, you just go to your Easter Church (fools)’

Yup what’s even more infuriating is we really don’t know, understand the real ‘nature of  the f..kr’s game’.

[Note: President Obama left for his successor an operational, fully staffed, pandemic alert and response system ...which of course the Red Queen quickly demolished after inauguration. Go figure. No, don’t  waste time and energy figuring, because it’s all consistent with the new crazy. You just don’t get it, yet.]

A Matter of Perception, or Continuance of Obfuscation?: the Inner Conflicts of American Democracy -Transparency vs. Efficiency

There was a recent article in Politico (Jan 15, 2020) about the pros and cons, and to what degree, of restricting access of the press to the Senate impeachment trial of President D Trump. The Republican head of Senate (actively pro-Trump), Senator Mitch McConnell, favors strict access restriction while the Democrat Senators and House ''plaintiffs' favor open, transparent hearings with more witness allowances and more press access.  All of this seems to resemble the beginning of a Constitutional conflict much resembling, to Pericles21, the pro-States Rights (and defense of slavery) arguments from John C Calhoun in the early (1820s) days of the American republic.

Pericles21 sees a commonality with both the current Senate arguments for strict constitutionality protection of audience limits on the impeachment press attendance and the 1830s States Rights debates led by John C. Calhoun (South Carolina).

The commonality is both the 1800s Calhoun-led debate over States' Rights (a century ago!) and the current 2020, McConnell-led debate over limiting the presence of the press in the Senate impeachment trial involve hidden agendas.

(And what's with South Carolina which seems to so reliably and regularly spawn wreckers of public calm and potentially the nation itself?)

In the case of States Rights, the debate was superficially about the rights of American States; the real debate was about slavery - whether to continue and protect slavery or move towards emancipation.

The hidden agenda in the current debate over limiting the press attendance in the Senate trial of President Trump,  and influencing nearly all post-2016 election Republican Party behavior, is 'Kompromat' (blackmail in American 'lingo') - whether Trump is guilty of treasonous acts and policy resulting from Russian 'Kompromat'.

Underneath it all, the article adds to a picture of how the Republican party's general political philosophy, intentions, and actions since the 2016 election especially have been antithetical to the Constitution's goals that stress open government operating in the public interest and guided by a healthy free press. In this respect, the question from the Senate Republicans was whether the presence of the press would disrupt the trial. The Democrat perspective hs been the press would help keep the Senate to an open (read 'transparent' and honest) track in the trial of Donald Trump.

As background to establish the aims of the Republicans in the impeachment trial, the Senate Republicans, under the 'leadership' of Mitch McConnell, publicly vowed to effect a predetermined outcome which is to throw out the House impeachment and exonerate of Trump. To achieve this result, the Senate made moves to prevent the House Democrats, whose body had voted to impeach Trump, from fully presenting their case for convicting Trump by heavily 'editing' what witnesses, and how many, the Dems could bring forth to testify against Trump. These Republican moves and similar obstructions starting soon after Trump's inauguration contributed to the primary impeachment points the House successfully brought against Trump.

The visible Senate Republican animosity towards the American press, and by default against transparency in government, has been palpable throughout the Trump campaign and the 3 years so far into the first term.  This is the Trumpists' banner so perfectly summarized in the invention of 'fake news' and 'alternative facts' so quickly played against any critical questioning of the Trump presidency.

Pericles21 interprets the Republican use of 'fake news' and 'alternative facts' as 'blocking' devices (sophomore debate tricks) thrown out with deliberate cynicism to obfuscate, divert and kill any and all investigations into Trump, his campaign and conduct in office.

Pericles21 further believes the Republicans' use of these and other obfuscation tricks cover up a dark picture of Russian influence, through Russian Kompromat, over the 2016 presidential election and continuing to influence the actions and policies of Trump himself, with the overt assistance of the Republican Senate and from the House (at least until the reversing 2018 Congressional elections made Democrats the controlling party in the House).

Russia's Kompromat influence over Trump (notably, but not exclusively, the Steele Dossier) is 'blackmail material' which was brought out before the 2016 election but has been left out of the impeachment picture. although directly 'thrown' up by Speaker Pelosi's statement that with Trump, "all roads lead to Putin" {Vladimir Putin, Russia's leader].

Trump's 'transgressions' during his compromised campaign and in his term in office so far present an unbroken trail of treason or near-treason, but certainly impeachable conduct.

Some day, Trump and Russian Kompromat will have to be uncovered. One hopes that American governance (bi-partisan) will learn from the lesson with the Trump debacle.

America On Sale: Branding and False Gods

Pericles21 regards the term 'branding', used by the Republican party, to be dangerously inappropriate when used to shape the American political picture.  The usual definition of  'Branding' is an advertising term used to 'sell' something by placing a label on inanimate or non-human objects. Branding also carries the taint of deception which further makes the term inappropriate for use to describe any part of the American democratic process; this is the perspective of Pericles21.

In 2009, Pericles21 commented on the 'tendency' of the GOP to brand itself without being real, or sincere:
the GOP is lost in a kind of political "mannerism" where they remember the postures but have lost any idea of the meanings and contexts of their awkward and jerky mimicry of conservativeness. The result is the derangement of Limbaugh, the Insaneness of Hannity, the Dreck of Beck, and Michelle Bachmann's stupid utterances accompanied with her really strange, vapid and pat-on-back-expecting-look-at-me-daddy false smiles. The GOP sputterings are not down-to-earth, nurturing oatmeal but dry sawdust and dull nails. [Isn't this 'branding' made into a god?']

Returning to the theme of this post, the artificial and manipulative 'branding' employed so frequently from the GOP lexicon,  agreeing with Pericles21, there are those who see 'branding' as a reality of American politics...with all the pejorative implications of using the term inappropriately.

A recent New York Times opinion piece, 'Donald Trump, Meet Your Precursor' (NYT, December 6, 2019) posits that 'branding', more than ever yet with precedence, is a descriptor of current American democratic mechanisms, our politics,  and warns that American democracy has come to resemble a market with bins full of glitzy labels affixed to ersatz (false) goods rather than a genuine, natural process of public self-governance.
"...the electoral arena has more in common with consumer brand market competition than it does to an academic symposium on immigration policy or a non-profit funded public awareness campaign. Brands are forced to adjust to market realities in ways few advocacy groups ever encounter."
The piece uses a historical review of American political history leading up to the Civil War and then during the "reconstruction' period to give examples of disguising political intentions and actions through branding to first preserve slavery and then, post-war, to turn back to de-facto slavery.  Central to this historical review is the role of the demagogue, the false profit warned about by the Founders...  the demagogue who by false branding and deceitful psychological manipulations, 'natural' aspects belonging to the demagogue's personality, would lead America away from the democratic intentions of the American Constitution and its founders.

But, as Pericles21 noted in 2009, brands can be falsely used as 'persuaders' not in response to genuine market forces but can be deliberately designed with the intention to actively shape and even create market preferences and redirect market forces, through artificial and sometimes cynical psychological manipulations.

Psychological manipulation, when rationalized apriori by the desired outcome, and especially justified 'post-facto' when successful, can then be defended as a 'good' even when the outcome was achieved using immoral or artificial actions and manipulations, i.e., "triggers" such as playing to, and magnifying, racist or gender prejudices.

The above background thoughts seem to describe where American democracy has arrived, the ascendancy of a demagogue who has compromised normative behavior with seeming ease despite being uninterested, and unknowing, in the principles of American democracy except where they benefit the personal interests of the demagogue...and his monetary rewards.

Hail to Sunnier (And 'Funsier') Shores: Four Possible Phases of Resignation

Pericles21's comment in the November 17, 2019, 'Palmer Report' post ("Donald Trump just completely changed his story about why he was at Walter Reed hospital").
Pericles21:
"On the Run' to sunnier shores. First, close up shop (condo) in the Big Apple (done) and relocate residence to Florida (done). Then fake a medical condition (done). Then, 'Sayonara' to the ugly 'Old Desk' in that stuffy, no-fun office, followed by 'au revoir' to Pelosi, Shiff and the whole DC crew including Giuliani, Flynn, Igor and Lev, Cohen,... Four Phases."

Facebook Is a Monopoly and Should be Broken Up: Mark Zuckerberg Is Not Guilty of Anything, Just Older, Maybe a Bit Out of Touch but Probably Obsolete to the Broader Facebook Utility

Facebook's success seems to have forced it to outgrow and evolve from its original, limited, business boundaries and model to where it is now not just a social-media 'gimmick' (even though a social-media market dominator) but it has also become a major piece on the global political chessboard...a chessboard where apparently no one in Facebook's executive ranks has the experience, training or skills to play.

(And Facebook's leadership shouldn't be expected to play this new game where instead of leading a colt around in a fenced paddock, the original Facebook world, they are now expected to ride a full-grown warhorse into a wilderness among the big cats, hostiles, and outlaw gangs...without much of a clue. Facebook appears in shock. Mark Zuckerberg's appearance before the American Congress after the revelation of Russian co-option of simplistic Facebook advertising policies to influence the 2016, American presidential election was the door-opener to kick Facebook out into the global political jungle...and Facebook was not prepared for that to happen - neither to encounter the Russians nor to be dragged into a strange and unfriendly world.

Facebook's problem is not its humongous corporate profits (nor even Mark Zuckerberg's legally and ethically acquired personal wealth).

Facebook's problem is it's newly recognized, unexpected, and newly utilized, super-power potential as a major force multiplier in unorthodox warfare. Facebook is now a pawn in a global game where it's market success and global reach hugely magnify even the most subtle mind-suggestions in Facebook ads...ads taken out, at bargain prices, by nefarious subscribers to effect nation-change and influence voters.

In today's global politics, Facebook has morphed into a powerful, but still subtle, geo-political weapon to wage unorthodox war.

Who could have predicted or even dreamed that Facebook could eventually be a determining factor influencing global social-political events and even nation-change? From all information, no one expected Facebook's role in influencing American voters in 2016.

Pericles21 thinks any competent political scientist or 'futurist' (who undoubtedly must have read the works of the 5th century Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu and more recently the unorthodox 'war' thinking of Chairman Mao), could have foreseen Facebook's evolution into something bigger-than-Zuckerberg (not such a rare growth pattern with concepts that start out simple but mushroom into 'hugeness', e.g., 'Cornflakes' breakfast cereal)...with correlating potential effectiveness in shaping user preferences; but it would have required the social-political scientist world to look at Facebook seriously as more than just a techy-wrinkle to make money off of kids and young adults (thus not worthy of scholarly attention).

IMHO, Facebook's execs still think of their 'charge' as a toy (although as a grown-up toy because of its very, very adult profits).

For the reasons above, IMHO, Facebook's community let Facebook down because the community did not mature as people with real lives and real care for life outside Facebook. They basically continued to live in the past and hold onto a passed-by, prior Facebook life and out-of-date market model.that came

Facebook's apparent lack of savvy about the shaded reality of big world politics made Facebook vulnerable to misuse, by Russia and China and Iran and others, in America's 2016 election, and continuing. That is what apparently happened with Russian interference in the American 2016 election - subtle manipulation of Facebook's simplistic, still-in-Kansas advertisement model to spread misinformation and subtle preference-shaping.

The first problem with Facebook's success was that its leaders did not recognize that Facebook's ad business could be effective at doing more than just generating product-ad revenue. Nothing wrong with that but it was a limited and unsophisticated perspective showing that Facebook's leaders did not understand what animal it was they thought they had in the cage.

But other folks, including Russia, China and most other major cyber players globally, took a look at Facebook and saw what Zuckerberg and colleagues apparently did not see - the opportunity to leverage Facebook to achieve other ends, adult ends, criminal ends in a world where ends justified means and where there are real victors.

Those other folks (the Russians et al) did not broadcast or publish their insight about Facebook's other uses, sad for us.

Those 'others' (Russians et al) broke open the old Facebook mold and dragged out the new Facebook...with its new powers and strengths... which they were able to keep hidden for a few years....and which now require new regulators and limiting boundaries.

FACEBOOK NOW AND IT'S FUTURE:
FACEBOOK has grown up and dominates the social media market it helped to create.

FACEBOOK IS A NEAR-MONOPOLY!

FACEBOOK is no longer just a kids' toy or even merely a social 'hook-up' gimmick.
FACEBOOK is a WAR TOOL, and Bad Actors want to use FACEBOOK for bad purposes (and apparently already have)
FACEBOOK dominates by a huge degree a strategically critical war-tool weapons sector.
FACEBOOK under Zuckerberg, it's originator, undoubtedly did not envision this end-use for Facebook.
But Mark Zuckerberg still acts and sounds like an unlicensed kid holding a 9mm.
FACEBOOK as a monopoly and with its importance as a weapon should be broken up.

Mark Zuckerberg, though of integrity, should not have a role in a future Facebook weapons-spinoff. (Except as a
need-to-know systems advisor)

America's Greatest Moments: The 'Quid-iest', The 'Pro-iest' and the Con (Of Course The Con)

[This post is intended to be a satirical and humorous 'fictitious' phone call between two American politician-businessmen men-pals - 'Norton' and an unnamed principal. Their implied relationship and roles in the larger world might 'ring a bell' in our minds.  'Norton' and man-friend are from the hugely popular, 1950's American television show, 'The Honeymooners' which centrally featured the get-rich-quick schemes of two urban, blue-collar  men - 'Ralphie' (Ralph Kramden, a bus driver and the more outspoken of the two men) and 'Norton' ('Ed Norton', a sewer worker, the loyal pal, and the 'lesser' of the two).  The 'Norton'  character is an important supporting character found in many significant tales of men searching for fame, fortune or just good times (the 'Sancho Panza', the Stan Laurel, the 'Pantagruel') and who agrees to every request...though sometimes needing sly arm-twisting and persuasion).  These two men share a central life-goal, which is to acquire great wealth, overnight, but their fantasies and schemes invariably end up with comical unsuccess.

But like Ralph and Norton, Donald Trump's actions mirror their never-successful, often over-the-top ambitious schemes that failed through comedic bumbling, 'poor choices' and resultant absurd dilemmas...that sometimes revolved around women's rights and social attitudes (!)...When is America going to settle down and address these issues, its racial history and finally move onward to the future?]

Ralph's and Norton's 1950s end game, to quickly 'strike it rich', seems to have been a central American fantasy then and continues to be so in the current political world surrounding Donald Trump.  Like Donald Trump, and his companions and henchmen, the two men of this post are not interested in historical fame as wise leaders unless this attribute leads to wealth; and it seems they believe they are already wise and leaders by some automatic endowment.

Wealth is the endpoint of all comical 'doings' of these kinds of characters, fictional and real.  Currently, these 'doings' have almost exclusively sprung from Donald Trump's attempts to carry off being President; but Trump's political moves and personal behavior often seem to be undecipherable,  sometimes wacky, and too often conducted under the surface...and or for nefarious reasons not always in the best interest of America.

Eerily, the relationship and life-doings' of these two television sitcom men-pals seem, 65 years later, to closely resemble the Trump administration's sometimes clueless efforts to steer the American ship of state through global and domestic waters.  Furthermore, the Trump administration appears not to have a ship's compass except when there is wealth to be gained.
